The Right Livelihood College (RLC) Campus at the Center for Development Research (ZEF), University of Bonn, Germany, has announced scholarship opportunities for PhD students from Africa, Asia and Latin America to participate in an international transdisciplinary workshop on Sustainable Use and Conservation of Natural Resources.
The workshop will take place in Bonn, Germany, from December 1–2, 2026, with participants expected to arrive on November 30 and depart on December 3, 2026.
The initiative seeks to strengthen interdisciplinary research, encourage knowledge exchange and promote innovative approaches to addressing environmental and natural resource challenges affecting communities across the world, particularly in the Global South.
Applications are open to eligible doctoral students currently studying at universities in Germany. The application deadline is November 10, 2026.
About the Right Livelihood College
The Right Livelihood College is a global transdisciplinary education and research initiative established through collaboration between universities and the Right Livelihood Foundation, widely recognised for awarding the Right Livelihood Award, often referred to as the Alternative Nobel Prize.
The RLC Campus in Bonn is hosted by the Center for Development Research at the University of Bonn. Its activities are funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), with financial support from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
Through its international academic network, the initiative promotes research, education and collaboration focused on sustainable development, social transformation and solutions to pressing global challenges.
About the Workshop: Sustainable Use and Conservation of Natural Resources
Natural resources provide the essential material, spatial and energetic foundations that sustain human life and economic development. However, increasing pressure from human activities, environmental degradation and unsustainable consumption continues to threaten the availability and long-term sustainability of these resources.
The workshop will explore the interconnected challenges associated with natural resource management, including:
Climate change and environmental degradation.
Biodiversity loss and deforestation.
Soil degradation and declining agricultural productivity.
Water scarcity and unsustainable water management.
Depletion of ocean ecosystems.
Unsustainable exploitation of natural resources.
These challenges have particularly severe consequences for communities in the Global South, where millions of people depend directly on natural resources for their livelihoods.
Smallholder farmers and other resource-dependent populations across sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Latin America are especially vulnerable because of poverty, limited resources and reduced capacity to withstand environmental and economic shocks.
The workshop will therefore examine approaches that balance economic development with the sustainable use and conservation of natural resources.
Workshop Objectives and Learning Opportunities
The workshop will bring together PhD students, senior experts, a Right Livelihood Award Laureate and invited specialists from different parts of the world.
Participants will engage with practical case studies from Africa, Asia and Latin America, explore conceptual approaches and examine current debates surrounding sustainable resource management.
The programme will pursue four main objectives:
Strengthen participants’ understanding of concepts and methodological approaches relevant to natural resource management and conservation.
Critically assess different pathways for the sustainable use and conservation of natural resources.
Provide opportunities for doctoral researchers to present and discuss their own research and case studies.
Promote knowledge exchange, professional networking and the transfer of expertise between PhD students, international experts and a Right Livelihood Award Laureate.
An important feature of the workshop is its transdisciplinary approach, encouraging researchers to integrate scientific knowledge with the experiences of local communities, development practitioners, conservation specialists and other stakeholders.
The working language throughout the workshop will be English.
Scholarship Coverage
Selected participants will receive comprehensive financial support covering the main expenses associated with attending the workshop in Bonn.
The scholarship will cover:
Travel expenses within Germany.
Hotel accommodation in Bonn.
Full catering throughout the workshop.
